Day 25 of Chapter 6 Lanka Kaand of Ramcharitmanas. translated in English
‘Raam Charit Maanas’ authored by Shree Tulsidas Jee, interpreted in English, and made Screen Readable by Professor T K Bansal for Blind and Visually Impaired Individuals.
6.1 Invocations
Couplets :
1
…O’ Heart, why do you not worship Lord Raam, who wields the time as His bow and commands the various divisions of time, namely, a millisecond, an atom, an era, a year, and the lifespan of the universe, for His fierce arrows?”
Shlok :
1
“I worship Shree Raam, the Supreme Lord, who is adored by the enemy of Cupid, Lord Shiv; the One who dispels the fear of repeated births and deaths; who is like a lion to the intoxicated elephants in the form of time or death; who is the Lord of realized sages; who can be understood through knowledge; who is a repository of virtues; who is unconquerable, devoid of material qualities, free from material defects, beyond material nature (Maya); the Lord of Demigods; devoted to destroying evil-doers; the sole protector of Brahmins; beautiful as a rain-filled cloud; with lotus eyes; and the One who has appeared as the King of Earth…
2
…I bow to Lord Shiv, whose charm is incomparable, with fair complexion like a conch shell and the Moon. He is adorned with clothing made of tiger’s skin and ornaments made of snakes, which are terrifying like Death. He is fond of the celestial river Ganga and the Moon; the Lord of the sacred city of Kashi; the destroyer of all sins of the age of Kali; akin to the Kalpavriksh, the celestial wish-fulfilling tree; the embodiment of all virtues; the destroyer of Cupid; and the revered husband of Goddess Parvati…
3
…May Lord Shambhu, the bestower of blessings; the One who easily grants liberation to pious beings, which is extremely difficult to obtain; and who punishes the wrongdoers; may He extend His blessings upon me…
6.2 Lord Ram establishes Shree Rameshwar at the Sea Shore.
Sorttha : 1
1
Upon hearing the words of the Ocean, Shree Raam summoned the ministers, and the Lord said, “What is the reason for delay now? Build the bridge so that the army may cross over.”
2
Joining his palms, Jambvant said, “O’ Glory of the Solar race, your name itself, my Lord, is the bridge on which men can embark and cross the ocean of mundane existence…
Quadrupeds :
1
…Then crossing this small ocean will not take much time. Hearing this, Hanuman jee, the son of the Wind God said, “Lord, your glory is like the massive fire that burns beneath the ocean’s bed. It had earlier dried up the ocean of its water…
2
…But the ocean was filled again by the stream of tears shed by Your enemies’ wives, and that is why the water has turned salty.” Hearing such a hyperbolic remark, the monkeys rejoiced and gazed at the countenance of Shree Raam.
3
Jambvant then called upon the two brothers, Nal and Neel. He narrated the entire episode to them and said, “Invoke the glory of Shree Raam in your hearts and start building the bridge, and you will experience no difficulties.”
4
Then he called upon the groups of monkeys and said, “Listen to my request, enshrine Lord Raam’s feet in your hearts, and let all the monkeys and bears engage in a playful act…
5
…Go forth formidable troops of monkeys and bring numerous trees and mountains.” Hearing his command, the monkeys and bears set forth, cheering and exclaiming, “Glory to the Almighty Raghuveer, the repository of valour.”
6.2 The construction of the bridge over the ocean by Nul and Neel, and Lord Raam's establishment of Shree Rameshwar.
Couplet : 1
1
The monkeys and bears uprooted gigantic mountains and trees, bringing them to Nal and Neel, who then crafted them to construct the bridge.
Quadrupeds :
1
The monkeys brought massive mountains and hurled them towards Nal and Neel, who caught them easily like a ball. Upon witnessing the construction of the beautiful bridge, Lord Raam, the ocean of mercy, smiled heartily and said,…
2
…”This spot is extraordinarily wonderful and perfect in every way. One cannot express the infinite glory of this place. I will establish an emblem (Shiveling) of Lord Shambu here; my heart harbours this deep resolve.”
3
…Upon hearing Shree Raam’s words, the King of the Monkeys, Sugreev, dispatched many messengers who invited and brought along all the top sages to the location. A Shiveling was ceremoniously installed and reverently worshipped. Lord Raam expressed, “No one else is dear to me as Shiv jee…
4
…An enemy of Lord Shiv who claims to be my devotee, cannot attain me even in a dream. The one who is hostile to Lord Shankar and yet desires devotion to me is doomed to hell, is foolish, and lacks wisdom…
Couplet : 2
1
…Those who are devoted to Lord Shankar, but are hostile to me, or hostile to Lord Shankar but are my devotees, such individuals will reside in the most frightful hell until the end of creation…
Quadrupeds :
1
…Those who behold Lord Raameshwar (Shiveling), shall find their way to my abode upon leaving their material bodies. And those who come and offer the holy water of the celestial river Ganga to Lord Raameshwar shall attain ultimate liberation, merging with me in divine union…
2
…One who serves Lord Raameshwar with no material desires in their heart, after renouncing all deceit, will be granted my devotion by Lord Shankar. And those who come and see the bridge erected by me will be able to cross the ocean of mundane existence effortlessly.”
3
Shree Raam’s words gladdened the hearts of all, and thereafter, all the great sages returned to their respective hermitages. Lord Shankar tells Parvati jee, “O’ Gaerija, it is the benevolent nature of Shree Raam that He is always affectionate towards those who surrender to Him.”
4
Meanwhile, the wise Nal and Neel completed the construction of the bridge. By the grace of Lord Raam, their glory spread far and wide. Those very rocks, which not only sink themselves but also cause other things to drown along with them, floated like so many rafts.
5
This was not due to any miraculous power of the Ocean, neither the porous quality of the rocks, nor any skill of the monkeys.
Couplet : 3
1
It was by the greatness of Shree Raghuveer that the rocks were floating on the Ocean. Those who worship others, leaving aside such a glorious Lord as Shree Raam, are indeed dull-witted.
Quadrupeds :
1
Nal and Neel constructed the bridge exceptionally firmly. The ocean of mercy, Shree Raam, rejoiced in His heart upon seeing it. The indescribable army then advanced, with platoons of monkey warriors roaring as they marched forward.
2
Shree Raam walked up close to the pier of the bridge and glanced upon the vast expanse of the Ocean. Hosts of water species emerged from the Ocean to catch a glimpse of the reservoir of mercy, Lord Raam.
3
There were many crocodiles, alligators, fish, and serpents, revealing their massive sizes, some as huge as twelve hundred kilometres in length. And then there were yet others who could devour even these enormous creatures. In fact, all creatures were afraid of one or the other creature in the Ocean.
4
They all gazed at the Lord and refused to leave, even when they were forced to move. Their hearts rejoiced, and they felt gratified to see the Lord. There were so many of them, that the Ocean’s water could not be seen. They were all lost in ecstasy upon beholding Lord Hari’s beauty.
5
The army advanced upon receiving the Lord’s command. Who can describe the vastness of the army of monkeys?
6.3 Shree Raam crosses the ocean with His army and resides at Subel mountain, Ravan’s anxiety and Mandodari’s advice.
Couplet : 4
1
With the bridge getting overcrowded, some of the monkeys, skilled in aerial flight, took to the sky, while others rode on the backs of sea creatures to cross the Ocean.
Quadrupeds :
1
Witnessing these playful antics, the gracious Lord Raghuveer and Shree Lakshman laughed heartily as they continued their journey. Thus, Lord Raghuveer, accompanied by His army, arrived at the shore of Lanka. The multitude of monkey chiefs defied description.
2
After crossing the Ocean, Lord Raam camped and instructed all the monkeys, “Go and feast on the delicious fruits and roots.” Upon hearing the Lord’s command, the bears and monkeys ran off in all directions.
3
To serve the Lord, all the trees bloomed with fruits regardless of the laws of time, whether in season or out of season. The monkeys and bears began feasting on sweet fruits, shaking the trees, and uprooting rocks, hurling them towards Lanka.
4
Wherever they found any demons while roaming in the area, they caught them and made them dance. Using their teeth, they chopped off the demons’ ears and noses. They released the demons only after the latter recited the Lord’s virtues.
5
The demons, with their mutilated noses and ears, approached Raavan and recounted their ordeal. Upon learning that a bridge had been constructed over the Ocean, Raavan was profoundly shocked and began to speak with all his ten mouths.
Couplet :5
1
He said, “What! Has He really bridged the Ocean, the Sea, the Brine, the Main, the Blue, the Waves, the Expanse, the Abyss, the Depths and the Lord of the Rivers?”
Quadrupeds :
1
Realizing his own nervousness, Raavan laughed, and then left for his palace, forgetting about his fear. When Mandodari heard about Lord Raam’s arrival and how just in mere sport, Lord Raam had tied a bridge over the Ocean, …
2
…she took Raavan by his hand and led him to her own palace. Then, after bowing her head at Raavan’s feet and spreading the scarf of her saree as a token of supplication, she spoke in a very sweet tone, “Listen to my words without getting angry, my beloved,…
3
…O’ Lord, one should enter into hostility only with those who can be conquered with intelligence and might. The difference between You and Shree Raghupati is like the difference between a firefly and the Sun, respectively…
4
… He who slew the extremely brave demons Madhu and Kaitabh (as Lord Vishnu), finished off the most powerful sons of Sage Kashyap’s wife, Diti Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu, (as Lord Varaha and Lord Narsimha, respectively), and who had tied up Bali and killed the thousand-armed King Sahastra Bahu, (as Lord Vaman and Lord Parshuram, respectively), the same Lord has appeared to relieve the earth of its burden, (as Shree Raam)…
5
…O’ Dear, do not oppose Him who is the Lord of Time, fate, and all living entities…
Couplet : 6
1
…After bowing reverently at the lotus feet of Shree Raam, hand over Jaanki jee to Him. Following this, entrust the Kingdom’s reins in the hands of your son, Meghnad, and retreat to the forest and worship Lord Raghunath…
Quadrupeds :
1
…O’ Lord, the Chief of the Raghu dynasty, showers immense benevolence upon the distressed. Just as a tiger refrains from devouring its prey when the prey approaches submissively, so does the compassionate Lord extend His kindness to those in need. You have fulfilled your purpose completely. You have conquered all the Demigods, demons, and every living and non-living entity that exists in creation…
2
…O’ Ten-headed Raavan, the sages have decreed that it is the duty of a king to retreat to the forest in the fourth stage of his life. Therefore, please proceed to the forest and offer your prayers to Him who is the creator, preserver, and destroyer of the cosmos…
3
…And He is Shree Raghuveer, the One who is gracious upon the suppliant. O’ Lord, renounce all your attachments and worship Him. For the devotion of Whom the realized saints practice penance, and kings renounce their kingdoms, becoming detached,…
4
…that Lord of the Koshal Kingdom, Shree Raghunath, the Chief of the Raghoos, is Shree Raam. He has arrived here to shower His grace upon you. My dear, if you accept my advice, your beautiful and holy renown shall spread throughout the three worlds.”
6.4 Dialogue between Raavan and his son Prahast. Lord Raam rests on Mount Subel and a description of the rising moon
Couplet : 7
1
With these words, tears welled up in Mandodari’s eyes, and her limbs trembled as she clasped Raavan’s feet. She pleaded, “My Lord, worship Shree Raghunath, so that my marital life may last for eternity.”
Quadrupeds :
1
Raavan then lifted Mandodari, the Maya demon’s daughter, and began boasting of his own prowess, saying, “Listen, my dear, do not fear needlessly. Is there any warrior in the entire world, like me?…
2
…With the might of my arms, I have conquered Demigods such as Varoon (Water); Kubair (Wealth); Pawan (Wind); Yameraj (God of Death); and all the guardians of the ten directions. All the Demigods, demons and human beings are under my control. So why, then, has fear gripped you?”
3
After reassuring Mandodari in various ways, he returned once more to his court and took his seat. In her heart, Mandodari realized that Raavan was under the sway of his impending death, which has fuelled his false pride.
4
Upon returning to his court, Raavan once again sought advice from his ministers, asking, “How shall we proceed in confronting the enemy?” The ministers responded, “Listen, O’ Lord of the Demons, why do you repeatedly inquire about this matter?…
5
…What is there to fear that we must contemplate? Humans, monkeys, and bears are merely our food to consume.”
Couplets : 8
1
Having listened to the words of the ministers, Ravan’s son, Prahast, started to speak with folded palms, “My Lord, I request you not to act against the principles of righteousness, for the wisdom of the ministers is limited…
Quadrupeds :
1
…These foolish ministers are engaging in flattery, speaking words that they believe you desire to hear. My Lord, their words will not serve you in any beneficial manner. A monkey leaped across the ocean and arrived in Lanka. To this day, all the people reminisce and sing about his exploits in their hearts…
2
…Did everyone lose their appetite then? When he was burning the city, why didn’t anyone catch and devour him? These ministers have provided advice that is pleasing to hear, but in the end, it will bring sorrow…
3
…The One who effortlessly built a bridge over the ocean, as if it were child’s play and led His army to the Subel mountain, can He be an ordinary man, whom you claim to devour? All these people are simply bragging (talking like mad people)…
4
…Dear father, please listen to me attentively and do not consider me to be a coward. In this world, there are countless individuals who are inclined to speak and hear pleasant words…
5
…Those men, however, who hear and speak words that are most beneficial, yet harsh to the ears are rare, my Lord. Listen to my righteous advice, first, send an envoy to Shree Raam, and upon returning Sita jee, establish friendship with Him…
Couplets : 9
1
…If Shree Raam were to go back with His army upon getting His wife, there is no point in provoking a fight. However, if He does not, then you may confront Him face to face on the battlefield, O’ Father, and fight fiercely…
Quadrupeds :
1
…O’ Lord, if you agree with my advice, your fair renown will spread throughout the world, in both the scenarios, by returning Jaanki jee or by winning or bravely perishing in battle.” The ten-headed Raavan got extremely angry upon hearing his son’s advice and said, “Who has imparted such wisdom to you?…
2
…You are harbouring doubt and fear even before the fight has begun. You have indeed become a blemish on your clan, akin to a prickly plant that infects bamboo roots, causing destruction to the bamboo.” Upon hearing his father’s extremely harsh and rude words, Prahast departed for his home, uttering these bitter words,…
3
…”Just as medicine proves ineffective on a person destined to die, good advice seems to have no impact on you.” Realizing that it was now evening, the ten-headed Ravan left for his palace, proudly admiring his twenty arms.
4
Atop Lanka, there stood a palace with a unique amphitheatre. Ravan went and sat there, while the Kinnars (celestial musicians and dancers) started reciting songs in praise of him.
5
Many musical instruments, such as cymbals, drums, tabor, and harp (veena) played, while skilled celestial damsels danced.
Couplet : 10
1
Raavan constantly indulged in luxuries, surpassing the opulence of even the Demigod Indra, the Lord of Heaven, a hundred times over. He harboured no fear or worry about the immensely powerful enemy at his door.
Quadrupeds :
1
At this end, Shree Raghuveer encamped with His vast army on the Subel mountain. Upon seeing a very high, supremely picturesque, flat, and notably shiny bright summit,…
2
…Lakshman jee meticulously adorned a spot with beautiful flowers and soft leaves from the trees with his own hands and laid a charming and soft deerskin on top of them. It was upon this seat that the gracious Lord Raam rested Himself.
3
The Lord rested His head on Sugreev’s lap, with the bow to His left and the quiver to His right. With both His lotus-like hands, He gently caressed His arrow, while the King of Lanka, Vibhishan, whispered some words into His ears.
4
The blessed Angad and Hanuman jee tenderly massaged the Lord’s lotus feet in many ways. Lakshman jee sat behind in a warrior’s posture, with his quiver securely fastened to his waist and bow and arrow in his hands.
Couplet : 11
1
In this manner, the gracious Lord, a mine of virtues and beauty, Shree Raam, rested. Those people are truly blessed who are always immersed in thoughts of the Lord, as depicted here.
2
Gazing eastward, the Lord beheld the moon ascending above the horizon and addressing everyone, He said, “Just look at the Moon; see how fearless, akin to the king of the jungle (lion), it appears…
Quadrupeds :
1
…Residing in the eastern quarter, which may be compared to a mountain cave, the Moon is an embodiment of supreme grandeur, glory, and strength. Tearing off the forehead of an intoxicated elephant, symbolizing darkness, the lion in the form of the Moon roams in the forest of the sky…
2
…The stars scattered across the sky resemble numerous pearls adorning a beautiful woman, akin to the night.” The Lord then asked, “O’ Brothers, now tell me, what do you think of the dark spots on the Moon, according to each of your perspectives?”
3
Sugreev said, “Listen, O’ Chief of the Raghoos, it is only the shadow of the Earth that is seen on the Moon.” Someone said, “The demon Rahu had struck Moon; the scar left on his heart appears as dark spots on it.”
4
Someone else said, “When Lord Brahma created the face of Cupid’s wife, Rati, He extracted the essence of the Moon’s beauty and bestowed it upon her. That void is still visible in the heart of the Moon, and the shadow of the sky falls upon this passage, resembling the Moon’s dark spots.”
5
The Lord said, “Poison is Moon’s most beloved brother and that is why the Moon has given him a place in his heart. Spreading its rays of material desires, it causes agony in the hearts of separated lovers (men and women).
6.5 Lord Ram’s arrow strikes down Ravan’s crown and umbrella. Mandodari advises Ravan again and tells him about Lord Ram’s glory.
Couplet : 12
1
Hanuman jee said, “Listen, O’ Lord, the Moon is a devoted servant of Yours. It is Your image enshrined in his heart that creates the illusion of dark-hued spots on its surface.”
2
Hearing the words of the Wind God’s son, the all-wise Lord Raam laughed heartily. Then, looking towards the southern direction, the All-merciful Lord Raam said,…
Quadrupeds :
1
…”Vibhishan, look how the clouds are gathering and lightning is flashing in the southern sky. The dark foreboding clouds are rumbling with gentle sounds. May there be no heavy hailstorms!”
2
Vibhishan replied, “Listen, my gracious Lord, neither is lightning flashing nor is there a cluster of dark clouds. On top of Lanka, there is a palace with an amphitheatre, where Raavan is watching a dance and musical performance…
3
…Above Raavan’s head, there is a large royal umbrella that appears like a very dark cluster of clouds. And Queen Mandodari’s earrings appear to be flashing like lightning, my Lord…
4
…while the distinctive sound of the tabors and drums is the sweet rumbling that you hear, O’ King of Demigods.” Lord Raam smiled and understood that it was a display of Raavan’s false pride. He then strung an arrow on His bow and discharged it.
Couplet : 13
1
With a single arrow, Shree Raam struck and severed Raavan’s umbrella, his crown, and Mandodari’s earrings. They fell to the ground before the eyes of everyone present there, but none could comprehend the mystery.
2
After performing this playful exploit, Shree Raam’s arrow returned and entered His quiver. Everyone in Raavan’s court became extremely frightened upon witnessing this great spectacle.
Quadrupeds :
1 Neither was there an earthquake nor any strong gusts of wind, nor did they see any weapons or missiles. Everyone thought in their hearts that a great ill-omen had occurred.
2
Seeing the entire assembly frightened, Raavan laughed loudly and contriving a clever answer, he said, “For whom the falling of heads has always been auspicious, how can the falling of crowns be inauspicious?…
3
… ”Therefore, return to your respective homes and go to sleep.” Everyone then quietly bowed their heads and went home. Mandodari was deeply troubled in her heart ever since her earrings had fallen on the ground.
4
With tears welling up in her eyes and joining both her palms, she spoke to Raavan, “Listen to my plea, O’ Beloved. My dear, renounce your hostility towards Shree Raam. Don’t keep holding on to stubbornness in your heart by regarding Him as a mere mortal…
Couplet : 14
1
…Believe my words, Shree Raam who is the crown jewel of the Raghu lineage, in His cosmic manifestation, encompasses the entire universe and exists in all forms of existence. The Vedas depict infinite cosmos’ residing within each of His limbs…
Quadrupeds :
1
…His feet symbolize the subterranean realm, while His head embodies the dwelling place of Lord Brahma, with the other realms situated upon His other limbs. The movement of His eyebrows signifies the formidable time, His eyes symbolize the Sun, and His hair embodies clusters of clouds…
2
…His nostrils represent the celestial physicians, known as the Ashwani Kumar’s, while the transition between day and night is symbolized by the blinking of His eyelids. The Vedas describe His ears as the representation of the ten directions. Air symbolizes His breath, while his own speech embodies the Vedas themselves…
3
…His lips personify greed, while his formidable teeth represent the God of Death. Maya, the illusionary energy, embodies His laughter, while His arms symbolize the Protectors of the ten directions. Fire manifests as His mouth, water as His tongue, and the acts of creation, preservation, and destruction of the universe are represented by His gestures…
4
…The eighteen principal species of the vegetable kingdom are represented by the hair extending from His chest to His navel, the mountains are His bones, and the rivers represent the network of His veins. The ocean is symbolized by His belly, while Hell is represented by His lower organs. In essence, the entire Universe is a manifestation of the Lord, so what purpose is served by delving into further details?…
Couplet : 15
1
…Lord Shiv represents His ego, Lord Brahma embodies His intellect, the Moon symbolizes His heart, and the great Vishnu represents His faculty of understanding. It is the same Lord Raam, manifested in both the animate and inanimate creation, who has taken up a human form…
6.6 Raavan, deluded by pride, disregards Mandodari’s advice. Angad departs for Lanka.
2
…Listen, O’ Beloved, contemplating in this manner, abandon enmity with God and nurture devotion towards the feet of Shree Raghuveer, ensuring that I never lose you in this lifetime.
Quadrupeds :
1
Raavan burst into laughter upon hearing Mandodari’s advice and remarked, “Ah, how mighty is the power of delusion! Indeed, everyone has correctly noted these eight flaws that reside within a woman’s heart-…
2
…Courage, falsehood, fickleness, deceit, ignorance, fearfulness, impurity and mercilessness. You have revealed the enemy’s full cosmic form and conveyed its formidable terror to me…
3
…O’ Dear, all that is encompassed within that cosmic form is naturally under my control. It is by your grace that this has become clear to me now. My beloved, I now comprehend your cleverness. By depicting the cosmic form, you were indeed extolling my own glory…
4
…O’ Doe-eyed beauty, your words are profoundly enlightening, delightful to comprehend and dispel fear upon hearing them.” Mandodari was now convinced in her heart that her husband’s impending death had deluded his mind.
Couplet : 16
1
Raavan spent the entire night indulging in laughter and jest in various ways, until the break of dawn. Then, the naturally fearless ruler of Lanka, consumed by his false pride, departed for his royal court.
Sorttha:
2
Even if the clouds rain down nectar, a bamboo cane does not bear flowers or fruits. Similarly, the light of wisdom will never dawn in the heart of a fool, even though he may have a teacher as great as Lord Brahma himself.
Quadrupeds :
1
On this side, in the morning, the finest of the Raghoos, Shree Raam, woke up and summoned all his ministers. He inquired, “Please, quickly propose what our next course of action should be?” Jambvant bowed his head at the Lord’s feet and said,…
2
… ”Listen, O’ Omniscient Lord, you dwell in the hearts of all, and You are the repository of wisdom, glory, righteousness, and virtues. I will propose a solution according to my intellect. You should dispatch Bali’s son, Angad, to Lanka as an envoy.”
3
This suggestion found favour with everyone, and the epitome of mercy, Shree Raam, addressed Angad, “O’ Son of Bali, you are a mine of wisdom, strength, and virtues. Go to Lanka for the fulfilment of my mission…
4
… You are exceedingly smart, and you already understand everything; there is no need for me to give you any further instructions. Engage in dialogue with the enemy in such a manner that it accomplishes our objectives while also promoting their well-being…
Sorttha : 17
1
Bowing before the Lord’s command and offering his obeisance to Shree Raam’s feet, Angad got up and said, “O’ Lord Raam, he himself becomes an ocean of virtues upon whom You bestow Your grace.”
2
“All the tasks of My Lord are self-accomplishing. He has simply honoured me by assigning His task to me.” Prince Angad rejoiced in his heart with this thought, and his body thrilled with joy.
6.7 Angad-Raavan dialogue in Raavan’s court
Quadrupeds :
1
After paying homage to the Lord’s feet and cherishing His glory in his heart, Angad bowed his head before everyone and departed. With the Lord’s glory enshrined in his heart, Angad, the gallant son of Bali, was a naturally fearless warrior.
2
Upon entering Lanka, Angad encountered one of Raavan’s sons (Prahast), engrossed in play. Their exchange swiftly escalated as both were extremely brave and in the prime of their youth.
3
Raavan’s son raised his foot to kick Angad, who seized his leg, swung him around, and dashed him to the ground with a such massive force that it resulted in his demise. When the hosts of demons saw such a formidable warrior, they scattered in all directions, too frightened to even raise an alarm.
4
They refrained from informing one another of what had occurred, choosing instead to remain silent as they thought of the death of Raavan’s son. A cry echoed throughout the entire city, declaring that the same monkey who had set Lanka ablaze had arrived.
5
Everyone became gripped with extreme fear, wondering, “O’ Lord, what will he do now?” Without uttering a word, they directed Angad to the royal palace. Anyone who caught Angad’s gaze turned pale with fear…
Couplet 18
1
Meditating on Lord Raam’s lotus-feet within his heart, Angad arrived at the gates of Raavan’s royal court. The valiant Angad, an embodiment of strength and patience, stood tall and proud like a lion, surveying his surroundings.
Quadrupeds :
1
Angad swiftly dispatched a demon to inform Raavan of his arrival. Upon hearing the news, the ten-headed Raavan burst into laughter and remarked, “Let him come. Let us see from where this monkey has arrived.”
2
Hearing Raavan’s command, numerous messengers ran to bring Angad, the elephant among monkeys, to the court. Angad arrived and beheld Raavan seated in his court, resembling a towering mountain of kohl.
3
Raavan’s arms resembled mighty trees, his heads akin to towering mountain peaks, while the hair covering his body resembled countless creepers. His mouths, noses, eyes, and ears resembled vast caves and crevasses.
4
The son of Bali was an exceedingly courageous warrior, harbouring no fear in his heart as he stepped into Raavan’s court. The assembly immediately rose at the sight of Angad, igniting great fury within Raavan’s heart.
Couplet : 19
1
Just as a fearless lion enters and walks amidst a herd of intoxicated elephants, Angad took his seat after bowing in Raavan’s court, having meditated on Shree Raam’s glory in his heart.
Quadrupeds :
1
The ten-headed Raavan asked, “Monkey, who are you?” Angad replied, “O’ Ten-shouldered Raavan, I am Shree Raghuveer’s messenger. My father and you were friends. That is why I have come for your welfare, O’ Sir…
2
…You belong to a noble clan and are a grandson of Sage Pulastya. You have worshipped Lord Brahma and Lord Shiv in many ways, received boons from them, and accomplished all your tasks. You have won over the guardians of various regions of the universe and all the kings…
3
…Under the influence of your kingly pride and attachments, you have abducted the mother of the Universe, Sita jee. Now, heed my friendly advice, and the Lord will forgive all your offences…
4
…Place a straw between your teeth, take an axe by your throat, and gather all your family members, including your wives, with you. Then, respectfully place the daughter of King Janak in front and proceed to Shree Raam, shedding all fear…
Couplet : 20
1
…And when you plead, ‘O’ Protector of those who surrender to You, the crown jewel of the Raghu clan, save me, save me, now.’ The moment He hears your piteous cry, the Lord will surely rid you of all fear.”
Quadrupeds :
1
Raavan said, “O’ Monkey child, watch your tongue! Do you not realize that I am the enemy of the Demigods? “Come on, disclose your name and that of your father, and by what connection do you claim your friendship with me?”
2
Angad replied, “I am Angad, the son of Bali. Have you ever met him?” Upon hearing Angad’s response, Raavan grew uneasy and responded, “Yes, there was indeed one monkey named Bali…
3
…O’ Angad, so you are the son of that Bali? You have emerged as blazing fire for the destruction of your own race, like fire destroys a cluster of bamboos. Why did you not perish within your mother’s womb? You were born in vain, now that you are proclaiming to be an envoy of hermits with your own mouth…
4
…Now tell me about the well-being and whereabouts of Bali these days.” Hearing Raavan’s words, Angad laughed loudly and replied, “In just ten days, you shall go to Bali yourself and inquire about his welfare after embracing him…
5
…What type of welfare comes to a person who is hostile towards Shree Raam, my father Bali will surely tell you himself. Listen, O’ Fool, only those people harbour doubt in their hearts who lack devotion for Shree Raghuveer…
Couplet : 21
1
…Indeed, I am the destroyer of my lineage, while you, O’ Ten-headed Raavan, stand as the protector of yours. Even a blind or deaf person would refrain from declaring such words, whereas you possess twenty ears and eyes…
Quadrupeds :
1
…Whose feet Lord Shiv, Lord Brahma, all the Demigods, and hosts of Sages yearn to serve, as his very envoy, how could I possibly be the destroyer of my own lineage? To have such an intellect, does your heart simply not burst?”
2
…Upon hearing Angad’s harsh words, Raavan retorted with an angry glance, saying, “Fool, I am tolerating your harsh words because I understand the rules prescribed in the Scriptures and the codes of righteousness.”
3
Angad countered, “I have heard of your righteousness, you’ve abducted another person’s wife. I’ve seen firsthand how you treat an envoy. Why not just drown yourself and end your life, O’ Upholder of so-called righteousness?”…
4
…When you beheld your sister, with her ears and nose severed, you forgave her after considering righteousness. Your acts of morality are renowned worldwide. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have witnessed your presence now.”

Raavan replied, “Stop blabbering needlessly, you foolish animal. Instead take a look at my arms, which represent many Rahoos (adverse planet) to devour the Moon, representing the might of the guardians of the various regions of the universe…

…Then you must have heard that on my mighty arms, in the form of lotuses, Lord Shiv adorns Himself like a swan in the celestial lake of Mansarovar, akin to the vast sky, along with the Kailash Mountain…
Quadrupeds :

…Listen, Angad, tell me, which warrior in your army will be able to encounter me? Your Lord (Shree Raam), has grown weak as result of separation from His wife, while his younger brother (Shree Lakshman) is distressed from witnessing his brother in pain…
2
…You and Sugreev are akin to two trees on the riverbank (vulnerable to being washed away at any moment). My younger brother, Vibhishan, is a great coward. As for the minister, Jambvant, he is very old and unable to take a stand on the battlefield…

Nal and Neel possess craftsmanship (but are not suited for fighting on the battlefield). But indeed, there is one mighty monkey in your army who had previously come to Lanka and set it ablaze.” Hearing these words, the son of Bali, replied,…

…Though it would be demeaning for Lord Raam to kill you, and He would receive great blame for it, yet mark me, the wrath of the warrior race is indeed fearsome, O’ Ten-headed Raavan.”

In this manner, Angad’s twisted words, sharp as arrows, shot forth from the bow of sarcasm, burning the enemy’s heart. The warrior Raavan proceeded to extract the arrows using a pair of pliers, in the form of his reply.

Then the ten-headed Raavan laughed and said, “Monkeys possess one great quality. They do everything in their power to serve those who take care of them…

…Angad, your entire race is devoted to their master, so it’s no surprise that you too would extol your Master’s virtues in this manner. On the other hand, I appreciate good virtues and possess great wisdom, so I won’t lend an ear to your repeated bitter words.”
3
Angad replied, “The Son of the Wind God gave me a true account of your appreciation for good virtues. Even after witnessing the ransacking of your Ashok Forest, the killing of your son, and the burning of your city, you still acknowledged that Hanuman jee did you no wrong…
4
…Recalling your charming disposition, O’ Ten-shouldered Raavan, I dared to undertake such audacity. Now, with my own eyes, I have witnessed what Hanuman jee also told me when he came back: that you possess no shame, anger, nor any feeling of resentment whatsoever.”
5
“With such a mentality, undoubtedly you have proven to be the cause of death for your own father, O’ Monkey.” Uttering these words, Raavan burst into laughter. Angad replied, “I have devoured my father, and now I will consume you as well. However, a thought has just occurred to me…

When Raavan insulted Shree Raam, the finest of monkeys, Angad became extremely furious. The person who listens to insults of Lord Hari or Lord Shankar incurs as great a sin as anyone who kills a cow.

The ten-shouldered Raavan was also about to topple down but managed to recover himself and stand up. His charming crowns fell on the ground, but he picked up a few and adorned his heads with them. Meanwhile, Angad took a few and threw them in the direction of where Lord Raam was.
4
Seeing the crowns approaching, the monkeys fled and thought, “O Lord, how come meteor showers are happening in daytime? Or has Raavan hurled four thunderbolts in anger, which are coming with great speed?”
5
Lord Raam laughed and said, “Don’t be frightened in your hearts. They are neither meteor showers nor thunderbolts, nor the malefic planets, Rahu or Ketu. They are the crowns of the ten-shouldered Raavan, dispatched by the son of Bali, that are coming this way.”

3
Raavan smiled upon hearing these cutting remarks and said, “Fool, from where did you learn to speak so many lies? Bali never boasted like this. It appears that your association with the hermits has turned you into a liar.”
4
Angad replied, O’ Demon with twenty arms, indeed I would be a liar, if I do not pull out your ten tongues.” Then, invoking Shree Raam’s glory in his heart, Angad filled himself with anger and firmly planted his foot in the midst of the entire assembly.
5
Angad said to Raavan, “O’ Fool, if anyone is able to lift my foot, I will accept my defeat and not fight with you on behalf of Shree Raam. Regardless of this, Shree Raam Himself will kill you and return with Sita jee to Ayodhya, that is for certain.” The ten-headed Raavan exclaimed, “Listen, all you brave warriors! Seize the foot of the monkey and dash him to the ground.”

Raavan’s son Indrajeet and many other brave warriors eagerly got up from their seats and rushed forward with all their might, employing various techniques, yet Angad’s foot remained unmoved. They then returned to their seats, with their heads bowed down in shame.

Kak Bhushundi jee tells Garud jee, “Once again, the enemies of the Demigods (demons) rose up and dashed forward, but they were unable to move the monkey’s foot, just like persons attached to material desires are unable to uproot the tree of desires implanted in their hearts.”

6.8 Mandodari offers advice to Ravan once again. Dialogue between Angad and Lord Ram
Quadrupeds :
1
Everyone felt defeated in their hearts upon witnessing Angad’s strength. In response to Angad’s challenge, Raavan himself rose to move Angad’s foot from the ground. As Raavan was about to grasp Angad’s foot, Angad said, “Holding my feet will not save you…
2
… Fool, why do you not go and hold Shree Raam’s feet?” Hearing Angad’s words, Raavan turned back, feeling highly ashamed in his heart. All his splendour was gone, and he was robbed of his glory, just as the Moon fades away at midday.
3
Raavan went and sat down on his throne with his head bowed, as if he had lost all his riches. Shree Raam is the universal soul and the Lord of life itself. How can a person who is hostile to Him ever find peace?
4
Lord Shiv tells Goddess Parvati, “Ooma, the universe comes into existence and meets its dissolution again by the mere movement of Lord Raam’s eyebrows. He can turn a blade of grass into a thunderbolt and a thunderbolt into a blade of grass. So, how is it possible that a vow made by his envoy can prove false?”
5
Angad then spoke of many righteous principles and rules established in the Scriptures. However, Raavan did not listen, for his end had drawn near. After crushing the enemy’s pride and glorifying the virtues of the Lord in front of Raavan, the son of King Bali (Angad) departed after uttering these words,…
6
…”I will kill you after I have sported with you in the battlefield for some time. There is no point in boasting about myself at this moment.” Before coming to Raavan’s court, Angad had already slain one of Raavan’s sons. Upon hearing this news, Raavan became sorrowful.

6.9 Preparation and commencement of war
Quadrupeds :
1
Upon hearing the news of the enemy, Shree Raam summoned all his ministers to come near Him and said, “There are four formidable gates surrounding Lanka. How should we attack them? Please mull over it and suggest accordingly…
2
… Then the King of the Monkeys, Sugreev, the Chief of Bears, Jambvant jee, and Vibhishan, invoked Shree Raam, the crown jewel of the Solar race, in their hearts and devised a solid plan. The army of monkeys was divided into four divisions.
3
And a General was accordingly assigned to each division. Then all the Generals were summoned, and the Lord’s glory was explained to them. Upon hearing it, the monkeys rushed forward, roaring like lions.
4
The monkeys bowed their heads at the Lord’s feet delightfully. Then, holding mountain peaks, the brave heroes sallied forth. The monkeys and bears roared and challenged the enemy with chants of “Victory to Lord Raghuveer of the Koshal Kingdom!”
5
Even though they knew that Lanka was an extremely impregnable fortress, the monkeys marched forward undaunted, guided by the grace of the Lord’s renown. After surrounding Lanka from all the four sides, like a mass of dark clouds spreading over the horizon, they emanated sounds of drums and kettledrums from their mouths.

3
…Brave warriors, go in all the four directions, and wherever you find monkeys and bears, seize them and devour them all.” Lord Shiv tells Goddess Parvati, “Ooma, Raavan’s false pride was akin to that of a sandpiper bird that sleeps with its legs facing the sky, thinking it will support the sky if it falls.”
4
Taking Raavan’s permission, the demons sallied forth, armed with superior slings, spears, iron clubs, maces, fierce axes, tridents, swords, and masses of rocks in their hands.
5
The demons advanced like foolish carnivorous birds that swoop down on red stones (rubies) the moment they see them, unaware of the pain they will inflict upon themselves when their beaks break against the hard gems (in the form of the formidable monkey army).

Innumerable bugles and clarinets sounded, and upon hearing them, faint hearts cracked. The demons went and saw the monkey and bear troops, who were exceptionally huge in size.
3
The monkey army was marching forward, undeterred by the formidable terrain in their way. Holding mountains, they crushed them to pave their path. Millions of brave fighters roared and made Shreel sounds from their mouths. They bit their lips and fiercely challenged the enemy.
4
On the other side, Raavan’s demons hailed for his victory, while on this side, Shree Raam’s monkey army shouted for Shree Raam’s victory. With shouts of “Victory, victory, victory,” the two armies clashed. The demons hurled volleys of mountain peaks at the monkey army. The monkeys seized them and hurled them back at the demons.
Verses :

Carrying massive mountains, the mighty monkeys and bears hurled them at the fort.
