7.1Invocations
Verses:
1
I constantly extol Shree Ramchandra, the praiseworthy Lord of Jaanki jee, with a greenish-blue complexion like a peacock’s neck. He is the greatest of all Gods, adorned with the mark of Sage Brighu on His chest, radiant and clad in yellow clothing. With lotus-shaped eyes, ever cheerful and a bow in His hands, He is surrounded by a host of monkeys, served by His younger brother Shree Lakshman, and mounted on the Pushpak plane.
2
The charming and delicate feet of Shree Ramchandra, the Lord of Ayodhya, are adorned by Lord Brahma and the great Lord Mahesh (Shiv jee). They are gently caressed by the lotus-like hands of Sita jee and are the constant focal point of meditation for the bee-like minds of His devotees.
3
I bow to the all-merciful Lord Shankar, who has a very fair complexion like jasmine flowers, the Moon, and the conch. He is the beloved of Goddess Ambika, the mother of the Universe, and bestows the heart’s desires. With beautiful lotus-like eyes, He frees us from the clutches of all material and sensual desires (control of Cupid).

1
With only one day remaining of the fourteen-year exile, all the citizens of Ayodhya were extremely restless and eagerly awaited Shree Raam’s return. The men and women throughout the city were distressed, their bodies weakened from the prolonged separation.
2
Meanwhile, auspicious omens began to appear, bringing joy to everyone’s hearts. The city of Ayodhya itself seemed to brighten, as if it were announcing the Lord’s imminent arrival.
3
Mother Kaushalya and the other mothers were filled with joy, their hearts brimming with the anticipation that someone might soon announce the arrival of the Lord, along with Sita jee and his younger brother Lakshman jee.
4
Bharat jee’s right eye and arm throbbed repeatedly. Recognizing this as an auspicious omen, Bharat jee was filled with immense joy. However, the very next moment, he began to ponder that…
Quadrupeds:
1
…With only one day left of Shree Raam’s exile term, the thought that this was the last hope for His return filled Bharat jee’s heart with profound grief. He wondered, “How is it that the Lord has not yet returned? Has He forgotten me, thinking me to be deceitful?…
2
…Ah, blessed is Lakshman; he is truly fortunate and devoted to the lotus feet of Shree Raam. The Lord knew me to be cunning and deceitful, which is why He did not take me with Him…
3
…And why wouldn’t it be so? If the Lord recalls my actions, there would be no redemption for me even after countless life cycles. But the Lord does not hold the faults of His devotees against them. He is a friend to the poor and possesses an incredibly gentle nature…
4
…I have a firm conviction in my heart that Shree Raam will surely meet me soon, as the omens are so propitious. However, if I were to remain alive after the end of the Lord’s exile, who would be lowlier than myself?”
Couplets: 1
1
Bharat’s heart was drowning in an ocean of grief over Lord Raam’s separation when Hanuman jee, disguised as a young Brahmin student, arrived like a boat to rescue him.
2
Hanuman jee saw Bharat jee sitting on a mat of Kusa grass, with his hair coiled up in a bun atop his head. His body was frail, and he was chanting “Raam, Raam, Raghupati…” as tears flowed from his lotus-like eyes.
Quadrupeds :

Hanuman jee was overwhelmed with delight upon seeing Bharat jee, his body thrilling with emotion as tears of affection flowed from his eyes. His heart was filled with profound gratification, and he spoke to Bharat jee in words that were like nectar to his ears,…

3
…After defeating the enemy in battle, with the Demigods extolling His glorious deeds, the Lord is on His way with Sita jee and his younger brother Lakshman.” Hearing Hanuman jee’s words, Bharat jee forgot all his sorrows, just like when a thirsty person finds nectar to drink.
4
Bharat jee replied, “Who are you, brother? And from where have you come to bring this most pleasing news?” Hanuman jee said, “O’ Ocean of mercy, listen, I am the son of the Wind God; I belong to the monkey clan, and Hanuman is my name…
5
…I am a humble servant of the friend of the piteous, Shree Raghupati.” Hearing Hanuman jee’s words, Bharat jee rose up and embraced Hanuman jee with deep affection. The warmth of his embrace was overwhelming, his heart was unable to contain the joy. Tears gushed out of his eyes, and his body was covered in goosebumps.
6
Bharat jee said, “All my sorrows have vanished at the sight of you, O’ Hanuman. In embracing you today, I feel as though I have embraced my beloved Shree Raam Himself.” He repeatedly inquired about Shree Raam’s well-being and then said, “Listen, brother, what can I give you for bringing me this joyful news?…
7
…I have pondered and come to realize that there is nothing in the entire world more precious than the news you have brought. O’ Brother, I cannot repay your debt. Now, please tell me about the Lord’s well-being and exploits.”
8
Then Hanuman jee bowed his head at Bharat jee’s feet and recounted the entire sequence of Shree Raghupati’s meritorious deeds. Bharat jee then asked, “Tell me, Hanuman, does the merciful Lord of the Senses ever remember me as one of His servants?”

…”Did the jewel of Raghu’s clan ever remember me as His servant?” Upon hearing Bharat jee’s humble query, Hanuman jee’s body thrilled with joy, and he fell at Bharat jee’s feet in reverence. 2
…Though many have praised my abode, Vaikunth, which is renowned in the Vedas and the Puranas, and is known throughout the world, it is not as dear to me as the city of Ayodhya. Only a few are aware of this unrevealed truth…
3
…This beautiful city is my birthplace, and the sacred river Saryu flows to its north. By simply bathing in its waters, any person can effortlessly reside near me…
4
The citizens of Ayodhya are extremely dear to me. This city is the root of all happiness and surely grants a place in my divine abode.” Hearing Lord Raam’s words, all the monkeys rejoiced and exclaimed, “Blessed indeed is Ayodhya, that has received praise from Shree Raam Himself.”

…The merciful Lord asks Bharat about his well-being, but words do not readily come to his help. Listen Shiva (Parvati jee), the bliss that Bharat was experiencing is beyond one’s speech and intellect. It can only be understood by the one who receives it.” Bharat jee then replied, “O’ Lord of Koshal Kingdom, I am fine now that You have blessed me with Your sight, realizing the distress of Your servant. Verses :
1
“Glory to the One who is both formless and with a divine form, free of material attributes and incomparable in beauty, the crown jewel among all kings. With the might of Your arms, you vanquished formidable and powerful demons like the ten-headed Raavan. By taking human incarnation, you alleviated the world’s burden and ended its most severe sufferings. Hail to You, O’ Protector of the suppliant and the all-merciful Lord; we bow to You along with Goddess Shakti (Sita jee)…
2
…O’ Lord Hari, the Demigods, Demons, Serpents, Humans, as well as the animate and inanimate creation are all under the sway of Your formidable illusory energy, Maya. They wander in delusion through endless cycles of birth and death, influenced by time, actions (karma), and the modes of nature (goodness, passion, and ignorance). O’ Lord, upon whom You bestow Your merciful gaze, their three types of sorrows come to an end. You excel in removing the miseries of life and death in this mundane existence. Please protect us, Shree Raam, we bow to You…
3
…Intoxicated with false pride of wisdom and lacking respect for Your devotion, which dispels the fear of repeated births and deaths, individuals may rise to ranks that even Demigods find difficult to attain. Yet, O’ Hari, we see them fall from even such heights. On the other hand, O’ Lord, those who renounce all other hopes but have total faith in You, choosing to remain Your servants and chant and meditate upon Your name, effortlessly cross the ocean of mundane existence…
4
O’ Lord Raam, we bow to Your feet which are worshipped by Lord Shiv and Lord Brahma. The dust of Your feet is a source of bliss and liberation. By a mere touch, it instantly redeemed Ahalya, the wife of Sage Gautam. The sages worship the celestial river Ganga which flows from the nails of Your feet. The soles of Your feet are adorned with marks of the flag, thunderbolt, goad, and lotus, and bear scars from the thorns encountered while wandering barefoot in the forest during Your exile.
5
The Vedas and the Scriptures describe You as the tree of the Universe, whose root is unmanifested and flows eternally without a beginning or an end. This tree has four skins or barks representing the four stages of consciousness (awake, dreaming, deep sleep, and moksha), six trunks representing the six states of existence (being, coming into being, transformation, growth, decay, and perishing), twenty-five branches, numerous leaves, and many flowers symbolizing the various elements of nature (the Supreme Lord, nature, intellect, false ego, ether, air, fire, water, earth, eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin, speech, hands, feet, genitals, anus, mind, sound, touch, form, taste, and smell). It bears two kinds of fruits – sweet and bitter – representing the pleasure and pain derived from one’s actions. The tree has only one vine, represented by material energy (Maya), which remains dependent on the tree, with countless new leaves and flowers sprouting every day, symbolizing the endless desires and actions to attain them. We bow to this universal tree form of You, O’ Lord.
6
O’ Lord, you are the Absolute truth, unborn and without duality, which can be known only through experience and is beyond the perception of mind. Those who meditate on Your unmanifested form by saying that they know you in this way only, so be it. But O’ Lord, we always would like to sing praises of Your manifested divine form. O’ Abode of mercy! O’ Mine of virtues! O’ Lord! We seek this boon from You that we should have love for Your feet only, by abandoning all vices in thought, word and deed.

4

…The people are distressed by numerous diseases and miseries afflicting their bodies, hearts, and minds. This is the result of disrespecting devotion to Your feet. Those who lack love for Your lotus-feet remain lost in the fathomless ocean of mundane existence…
6
…People who have no devotion to Your lotus feet remain extremely miserable, sinful, and unhappy. In contrast, those who rely solely on listening to or reading Your stories constantly hold saints and the eternal Lord dear to them…
7
…They are free from material attachments, greed, false pride, and ego, and to them, prosperity and adversity are alike. For this very reason, the sages renounce their faith in yoga (penance and control of mind and senses) and gladly become Your devotees…
8
…They always lovingly chant Your name and serve Your lotus feet with pure hearts. Remaining equipoised in every situation of honor or insult, these saints move about happily on Earth…
9
…I worship You O’ Shree Raghuveer, the bumblebee of the lotus-like hearts of sages. Lord, you are extremely steadfast in battle and invincible. I chant Your name, O’ Hari, and bow to You. Your name is a potent medicine to destroy the disease of birth and death and a remedy against false pride…
10
…You are a repository of virtues, amiability, and the supreme abode of grace. I constantly bow to You, O’ Lord of Sita jee. O’ Delight of the Raghoos, you bring an end to all pairs of contradictory experiences (such as joy and sorrow, pleasure and pain, attraction and repulsion). O’ Ruler of the Earth, just cast a glance on this humble servant…

3
…By listening to Shree Raam’s deeds, an ascetic gains devotion, a detached person achieves liberation, and a person attached to material desires attains ever-increasing prosperity. O’ King of Birds, I have narrated Lord Raam’s story to the best of my ability, which removes the fear and miseries of birth and death…

3
…Brothers, for my welfare you renounced all the comforts of your homes and for this very reason I find all of you extremely dear to me. My younger brother, my Kingdom, my wealth, Videhi, my life, my home, my family, and my near and dear ones…
4
…are all dear to me, but no one is as dear to me as all of you. I am not lying, for telling the truth is in my very nature. Every master, by rule, loves his servant; but I, for one, am exceptionally fond of all those who serve me…

He repeatedly lay prostrate on the ground, hoping in his heart that Shree Raam might ask him to stay back. He felt sad as he recalled the Lord’s characteristics – His countenance, manner of speaking, way of meeting and greeting, gait, and laughter.
3
However, perceiving the Lord’s facial expression, he spoke many words of profound humility and then departed, having enshrined the Lord’s lotus feet in his heart. After bidding everyone farewell with the utmost respect, Bharat jee returned with his brothers.
4
Meanwhile, Hanuman jee clasped Sugriv’s feet and sought his favour in various ways. Hanuman jee pleaded, “I wish to go and serve Raghupati’s feet for ten more days, and then return to behold your feet again, my master.”

In Lord Raam’s Kingdom, society was organized into four primary categories, with each person happily performing their duties and roles as outlined in the Vedas and Scriptures. These categories included the Brahmins, who served as priests, teachers, and intellectuals; the Kshatriyas, who were warriors, kings, and administrators; the Vaishyas, who worked as agriculturalists, traders, and farmers; and the Shudras, who were workers, laborers, and artisans. In addition to this social structure, individuals followed a life path divided into four stages: beginning with student life, progressing to married life, transitioning to asceticism, and finally reaching the stage of renunciation. Walking on the path of righteousness, people lived happily without any fear, sorrow or diseases.

All men and women were affectionate towards one another and each followed their prescribed duties, adhering to the rules set forth by the Vedas.
